黄永玉，1924年出生于湖南凤凰县城沱江镇，土家族人。因家境贫苦，只受过小学和不完整初级中学教育，十三岁便外出当学徒谋生，浪迹福建、安徽等地，受尽人间辛酸。黄永玉在颠沛流漓的生涯中艰苦读书、习文作画，以聪慧的灵感闯入美术宫殿的大门。后来辗转到上海、台湾和香港。他14岁开始发表作品，以后一段时间主攻版画，十六岁开始以画画及木刻谋生，其独具风格的版画饮誉国内外。曾当过瓷场小工、小学教员、中学教员、家众教育馆员、剧团见习美术队员等，后任报社编辑、电影编剧及中央美术学院教授、中国美术家协会副主席等。

黄永玉自学美术、文学，且卓有成就，被称为一代“鬼才” 。他博学多识，诗书画俱佳，还是诗、杂文、散文、小说、剧本大家。黄永玉擅长版画，主攻国画，其画构思奇特，造诣精深，出版过多种画册和文集。1956年出版《黄永玉木刻集》，其代表作"春潮"、"阿诗玛"曾轰动中国画坛。其杂文集《罐斋杂记》、《芥末居杂记》，散文《太阳下的风景》等在文坛上也有较大影响。他的画作在德国、挪威、法国、日本及东南亚各国巡回展出，曾荣获意大利最高荣誉奖“司令勋章”。2008年获“奥林匹克艺术奖”，是本届奥运会主办国(中国)唯一获此殊荣的艺术家，也是现代奥林匹克史上唯一获此奖项的中国人。
